Bendalis - Lyomark pharma

About the company

Bendalis is a leading pharmaceutical group based in Oberhaching, Germany, and a part of Lyomark Pharma, a respected supplier of sterile medicinal products founded in 1989. Specializing in the development and promotion of generic and niche proprietary oncology products, Bendalis operates within Germany and across various international markets. The company serves hospitals, medical specialists, retail pharmacies, and wholesalers, ensuring that their critical oncology products reach those who need them most.

"We were looking for a solution where we can get more information that can help us ensure better tracking and thus better identify problems. The tempmate overall package, from the service to the product, simply gives a well-rounded overall picture."

The Challenge

Like many in the pharmaceutical industry, Bendalis faces the critical challenge of ensuring that their oncology products are stored and transported under strict temperature conditions, typically 2 to 8 degrees or 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. Maintaining a fully traceable supply chain is essential to meet industry standards and ensure product efficacy and safety.

Initially, Bendalis relied on easy-to-use USB Single-use data loggers, such as the tempmate S1, for one-way transportation. These loggers were particularly convenient for international deliveries to countries like Canada and Egypt. However, these offline devices only allowed Bendalis to determine if a temperature deviation occurred, without providing live alarms. This lack of real-time visibility created significant blind spots in their supply chain.

Recognizing the need for a more advanced solution, Bendalis’ Quality and Technical Operations team sought to enhance their tracking capabilities, aiming for complete transparency from their cold storage facilities and transport to their customers’ premises.

The Solution

Upon discussing the traceability challenges with the tempmate team, Bendalis decided to test the real-time monitoring solution offered by tempmate.®-GM2, along with its associated Cloud platform.

With the implementation of the tempmate GM2, Bendalis would be allowed to pinpoint the exact time and location of any temperature deviations during transport and storage. This real-time capability allows Bendalis to identify and address issues immediately—for instance, when a specific temperature deviation is found to occur as a pallet is being loaded onto a truck.

Additionally, the GM2’s shock sensor provides invaluable insights into any incidents affecting the oncology products, enabling Bendalis to determine where, when, and how such events occurred, whether during transit, loading, or unloading.

The Outcome

The adoption of this fully traced solution has significantly enhanced transparency for Bendalis and its customers. They can now monitor the location of goods in real time, eliminating the need to contact the shipping company. This has been particularly beneficial for customers with limited warehouse operating hours, as Bendalis can inform them precisely when their goods will arrive.

Moving from single-use offline loggers to the rechargeable, multi-use GM2 devices has improved Bendalis’ sustainability efforts. The real-time devices can be reused multiple times globally.

Bendalis also opted for the rental model to ensure regular calibration—essential for compliance in the pharmaceutical industry. Each year, the devices are replaced with newly calibrated ones, ensuring accuracy and reliability.

The tempmate GM2 devices are configured quickly and flexibly via the Cloud. Bendalis currently operates 25 devices for ambient conditions and 25 for refrigerated transport, with the flexibility to make adjustments remotely without manual intervention. Color-coded points on the devices—red for ambient and blue for refrigerated transport—simplify the process for warehouse workers. If a device is needed for a different setting, it can be reconfigured swiftly via the Cloud.

In a further step towards sustainability, Bendalis has implemented a device return and recycling process. Customers receive pre-labeled boxes to return used devices, which Bendalis then collects via DHL. This process allows Bendalis to check settings, recharge devices, and prepare them for the next transport. All main warehouses are equipped with chargers, and a battery alarm alerts users when a device needs recharging, ensuring continuous operation.

"The overall experience with tempmate has been very positive. Any concerns we've had were addressed promptly, and the product itself offers great value. When you consider that it can be reused multiple times, it quickly outperforms the cost of disposable loggers, providing significant advantages at a more competitive price compared to similar options on the market."
